nearly $10 billion in aid for victims of super storm sandy. that is the first of two sandy relief measures making their way through congress. today is for the national flood insurance program. that was due to run out of money next week if congress did not act. currently 115,000 sandy-related claims as well as 5,000 claims from other floods. the governors of new york and new jersey said today's voting congress is a good start. they call it a down payment. votes are planned for january 15th at the house and there are many 51 billion in aid the senate approved. i hope they get rid of all the pork. the speaker pulled the bill from the floor because of the port. now we want to know what you think. here's our question. should homeowners without flood insurance to the bailout? log on. also resulted in the the shell. more to come including more on that any me jobs report. the fight over gun ownership and privacy. what's happening one small community that is creating waves of the country. for victims of superstorm sandy-- nearly $10 billion to pay for flood insurance claims. house speaker john boehner has promised a vote on another $51 billion later this month. president obama was reelected today. you might have thought that that happened in november but it was today that the house and the senate held a joint session to count the electoral votes from each state. no surprise: mr. obama won with 332 electoral votes to mitt romney's 206. but the president's margin was narrow when you look at the votes cast by individual americans. the popular vote. when you add their totals together, it comes to nearly 130 million votes cast and mr. obama won by about four points. he's the first president to get more than 51% of the vote twice since dwight eisenhower. this is the last thing you want to see when you're taking a flight: the pilot being hauled away by the police. it happened today in minneapolis aboard an american eagle commuter plane bound for new york. the pilot is accused of drinking too much. michelle miller is at laguardia airport for us tonight. michelle? >> reporter: well,

members at sandy hook elementary. a similar weapon used by the accused mass murderer james holmes who killed 12 people and wounded more than 50 others at a movie theater in aurora, colorado. it was a gun, not a baseball bat, that took the lives of more than 335,000 americans in the last decade. that's more than the entire city of st. louis or pittsburgh or cincinnati, gone. it's a gun, not a blunt object, that ends an average 609 american lives every week. 87 a day, 1 every 17 minutes. just in the last 24 hours at least 6 people were shot in chicago. two fatally. in greenland, arkansas, a man is under arrest for a triple shooting that left his wife and mother-in-law dead and another family member critically wounded. and in orange county, florida, a deadly drive-by killed one and critically injured another. so with this many lives at stake, how can it be sensible to defend the means of status quo slaughter? what can be the motive behind blocking any common sense reforms that could help limit this horrendous carnage. >> the basis of the second amendment is about resistant to government

and the events in sandy hook was overwhelming. it was a slaughter of the innocence. the crucial turning point of what ought to be a dialogue in three areas and the assault weapons and the high capacity magazine clips should be what we will do about mental health care services for people in this nation. i applaud the vice president and the commission. it appears to be far reaching in scope and my hope is what they will recommend is that we do ban assault weapons and the high capacity clips and we take a look at the mental health services in our schools and professionals and providing greater access to mental health services. to take a look at the loopholes and also we ought to begin. i don't have specifics, but we ought to begin about what are the culturings that glorifies violence. >> he said it doesn't have to be all or nothing and we would rather do something than nothing. we have advocates who point to the same issues with violence and movies and the television industry and the video games. all of those are warranted of our attention and doesn't need to be all or nothing. that seems to be

frustrating, i got angry. i was so very passionate, following what happened at sandy hook, as we all were. and my position on what should be done about gun control, i've been advocating for a long time. so this to me was a tipping point. and to hear them continue to espouse this, you cannot touch any guns philosophy, i found very frustrating. with alex jones, i took a different tact. my tact was to try and show that i could be a listener, that i would give him the time to explain, articulate his position, but instead, he didn't want to debate anything or discuss it. but i found it illuminating that during his rant, you got a real sense of what an element of the more extreme gun activists in this country genuinely believe. they believe that their government will perform as a sort of tyranny and overthrow them or try to, and that is why they all need to be heavily armed. and that's what he believes. that's what his followers, to his pretty well-listened to show believe. and i think sometimes, you have to give people just enough rope to tie themselves into a large, pretty unedifying not. and

and i were in shock to watch what happened in sandy hook. i immediately signed an executive order, we've got a school safety task force beginning to meet next week. i'm focusing on mental health, our school resource officers in school safety. and maybe some tougher penalties for firearms violations. but i don't think you'll see a lot of gun control bills in virginia, we're going to do what works and that's keeping kids in safe -- keep them safe in school with policies that are proven. >> do you reckon you're going to oppose what the white house is going to put out? >> i've got to wait and see what they're going to do. unfortunately, there was some immediate reaction by gun control advocates, i think, unfortunately to use this tragedy and -- in sandy hook as a reason to advocate any number of things that didn't have much to do with the facts of the case. we're going to do reasonable things. i think mental health is a big part of this. we went through this six years ago with the tragedy at virginia tech. we worked together on a bipartisan basis to improve our mental health laws and made
